Disproportionate burden
Interactive tools and transactions
We’ve assessed the cost of fixing the issues with PDFs and with interactive tools and transactions. We believe that doing so now would be a disproportionate burden within the meaning of the accessibility regulations. We will make another assessment when supplier contracts are up for renewal, likely to be in over the next two years.
Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations
PDFs and other documents
Some of our PDFs and Word documents are essential to providing our services. For example, we have PDFs with information on how users can access our services, and some forms published as Word documents.
The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services. For example, we do not plan to fix leisure walking leaflets.
We check all new PDFs and Word documents and make them as accessible as possible before we publish, unless making the document accessible is a disproportionate burden and would cause us to fail other legal requirements.
Live video
We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.
What we’re doing to improve accessibility
We are constantly trying to improve the accessibility of our website.
We have a subscription with Silktide who run automated reports on the pages (except media releases) on our website. This highlights instances that require attention. We deal with priority 1 issues first and then work through the list as capacity allows. We review the report regularly (weekly) as the web site is added to daily.
We have recently revised our page templates for most of the site. We plan to revise the templates and navigation for the Live Well sections of our website in the next six months.
We are working with suppliers of applications we link to from our website to make improvements to accessibility and functionality.
Measures to support accessibility
