Christmas crafts
This month saw a flurry of Christmas activities including a craft event at Riverside Park making decorations from natural materials. This year a range of items were made, from small hanging stars for on the Christmas tree, to willow angels and giant stars and wreaths to hang on the front door.

Willow bed creation at Riverside Park
In November, Ranger Jim teamed up with BEACON (Bollin Environmental Action and Conservation) to create a willow bed for cropping and using on the Park. Volunteers helped to clear a large area of vegetation, lay down a weed suppressing membrane and then plant small willow cuttings. In a few years time, the willow will be ready for use as a ‘soft engineering’, more natural river bank repair work material and for crafts.

Footpath Work, Bowdon
It is now the time of year that the rangers' focus changes from summer time work controlling vegetation growth on paths and footpaths to winter works replacing old and damaged 'furniture' such as fingerposts and stiles. The picture to the left shows a stile and finger post that have been replaced near Bow Green Farm in Bowdon.

Wildfood Walkabout, Rossmill
This is the time of year for harvesting nature's bounty. A wander around Rossmill this Sunday with Ranger Emma saw the discovery of a wide variety of native fruits, seeds and leaves that can be cooked or eaten raw. Attendees sampled himalayan balsam seeds and elderberries and tried some pre prepared nettle cordial and hawthorn chutney. Guidance was also given on identifying the plants to avoid when foraging.

Bio Blitz, Macclesfield Riverside Park
On Saturday, BVP and BEACON hosted the first ever Bioblitz at Riverside Park Macclesfield. The clash with the football didn’t put off lots of families who enjoyed a whole day of pond and river dipping, wild flower searches, bird walks and worm charming! All the species of plants and animals found on the day were sent to our local recording office and we’re planning to make the event annual.

Foot Path Clearing work, Roaring Gate Lane, Hale Barns
At this time of year footpaths are being cut back. The path between Roaring Gate Lane Hale Barns and Newall Road Wythenshaw had become very over grown as the field it passes through is no longer farmed. A day of strimming and cutting back trees means the line of the path is now walkable again.

Tree Work in Tytherington Wood, Macclesfield
After the recent high winds a number of large trees were either blown over or damaged. The tree pictured here had a limb torn from it in the wind but the remaining trunk had a split running right up it and had to be felled for safety reasons. Ranger Jim inspects the felled tree after felling it.
